CNC Turned Stainless Steel 316 Marine Propeller Shaft

A propeller shaft is one of the few CNC-turned parts where the cost of failure isn't measured in warranty claims—it's measured in rescue operations. When that shaft snaps 40 nautical miles offshore because of a stress riser nobody caught at final inspection, your customer doesn't call customer service. They call the Coast Guard.

Marine propeller shafts live in a brutal environment. Constant torque loading, cyclic bending from hull flex, saltwater corrosion on the outside, and the occasional grounding impact transmitted through the drivetrain. The shaft runs inside a stern tube packed with grease or flooded with seawater-lubricated bearings, so the surface finish matters—rough finish equals accelerated bearing wear, which means vibration, which means everything else starts loosening up.

We turn these in 316 stainless for a reason. Yes, 304 is cheaper and most marine catalogs list "marine grade" without specifying which one. But 304 in a stern tube application? You're betting that the shaft will never see temperatures above 60°C and the chloride concentration will stay below 200ppm. In open ocean water, chloride runs 19,000-35,000ppm. 304 will pit. 316 will last.

The real engineering challenge on a propeller shaft isn't the turning—it's the taper. Most marine shafts have a SAE taper or a keyway taper for the propeller hub, and that taper has to be within 0.02mm of the drawing spec across its full length. If the taper is off, the propeller doesn't seat flat, the hub loosens under load, and you get fretting corrosion between the hub and the taper. That's how you end up with a prop falling off mid-voyage.

Q: Do you make shafts longer than 3500mm?

A: For single-piece shafts, 3500mm is our max turning length. Beyond that, we can machine shaft sections with precision coupling flanges for field assembly. Most vessels under 100ft work within this range.

Q: What's the difference between 316 and 316L for propeller shafts?

A: 316L has lower carbon (<0.03%) which helps with weldability—important if you need to weld a coupling flange. For a solid bar shaft with no welding, standard 316 is fine and slightly stronger. The corrosion resistance difference in seawater is negligible.

Q: Can you balance the shaft?

A: We do static balance by default. Dynamic balancing requires specialized equipment—we coordinate with a qualified balancing shop if your application needs it.

Q: What taper standards do you support?

A: SAE J487 (standard marine taper), SAE J611, and custom taper angles per your drawing. Send us your propeller hub spec and we'll confirm compatibility.

Q: Do you supply coupling flanges with the shaft?
